TO CATCH A THEIF is a great movie, though. give me a good comedy anyday. the type of girl who happily tears the wings off of flies and watches them crawl around. this little girl begs and begs her broke mama for these shiny red shoes for her birthday. her mama scripes and saves and manages to buy her these shoes. to celebrate, her mama suggests she go to visit her sick grandma with a basket of bread to show off her shoes and check on the grandma. reluctantly, she agrees. she comes upon a big mud puddle and doesnt know what to do - she cant get her new shoes muddy. god, no. she tries to go around but its too big. she tries to hop over it, but stops herself because she knows she'll fail. she starts to lay her cape down, but doesnt want to get it muddy either. finally, she realizes what she must do. she lays down the loaf of bread and proceeds to walk across it. but her shoes stick and she starts sinking. she ends up underneath the mud and muck face to face with the toad king - he's never seen such beautiful shoes and wants to take her for his bride. naturally, she refuses. indignant and obnoxious, she quickly pisses off the toad king. 'well, if you wont be my bride,' he says ' i shall enjoy your beauty in another way.' and he turns her into a statue where she stays, for all eternity, with the wingless flies crawling up and down her nose.

i love it.

i just realized how amusing it is that i love to write and im not writing anything for this project. but if i was going to write something then id probably get bogged down in it and never finish. because wow do i live for fiction. sometimes i think thats why i get so into tv when i dont have time to read. i need some sort of story in the background. but i guess that doesnt explain why i get hooked on bravo reality tv shows. so now im officially procrastinating. ive made 30 stills and i need to make 31 more. sigh. and then theres this mag spread.and typography. the dilemma of the week is figuring out how to keep the store open and still have tim's bachelor party. all the boys who work with us are invited to the party. and its a saturday so im at class. the other girlfriends in the party are all kind of stoked about the prospect of it being cut short, but i am not having any of that. maybe ill just leave class early. :( and theres a big controversy about strippers or no strippers. i vote strippers, but im getting outvoted by the other ladies. so we shall see. yea, i think im out unfortunately. back to the drawing board. literally. hah. sorry. that wasnt funny. but ive been here since 11am so im a lil punchy.

i was trying to decide what i was going to do for this crazy flash project and i have decided i dont want to do writing. nope. no thankyou. i mean, theres a story, sure, but no subtitles. no voiceovers. just music. like an old movie. im drawing everything myself because, well, im masochistic, and needed something else to do :P and i was toying around with doing some family stories - but they all take more than 2 minutes. and then i wanted to take a story ive already written - cheating, i know - but i am not THAT good of an illustrator. i was driving home, blasting the music like i do and voila Bohemian Like You by the Dandy Worhols came on. everytime i hear that song i think of crazy kids running around doing things they shouldnt - so i am illustrating a bank robbery. so far, its awesome and i am having way too much fun drawing all this nuttiness. im halfway done the stills and, in another six or seven hours, i should be done.

oh. and on another note. last wednesday, for the first time all semester, i submitted a comp to my typography teacher and she didnt look at me like i'd just served her a steaming pile of shit. instead she told me it 'was pretty good' and moved on. this was a big moment in my little life. thought i'd share.

something just occurred to me today. In one month and 8 days i will be a mrs. actually, in one month and 5 days. because we're doing the court thing before the wedding. id like to see that i am appropriately terrified, but what seems really daunting is the one month and 4 days before hand. and shit just keeps happening! my dad - hes fine - was in a car accident on tuesday. hes fine. really. at this moment he is sitting on the couch watching some cheesy british show - Keen Eddie - with his chinese food and his heating pad. just like he should be. but still, the car rolled twice and is totally totaled. we had to go and get his junk out of it today. i hate impound lots. its a graveyard - dead car carcasses everything. bones sticking out, blood on the ground. you can almost hear the screams. ugh. and we have to sit there while some tool from progressive smiles and tells us we have to sign here here and here and my father fights off a panic attack in the background. i saved a peice of the car. which i guess is a little creepy, but hey thats me all over. im the chick with a butterfly wing in a box. hey i didnt kill it. what else...i tink i am going to do something for men's health. i just havent decided what. i think something to do with overtraining. we shall see... that's next on tonight's agenda.

i love cussing. nothing makes me feel better than a nice, gutteral battlecry. i bring this up because all day today i've been saying shit, i have to do that. or fuck, i have to do this. and somehow that little cuss makes it seem less scary. i have always had a guttermouth. since toddlerhood. my grandma used to babysit me while dad was at work and one day he came home and i ran to meet him - but, being tiny and wobbly as i was - i stubbed my toe. 'shit!' i cried out, as i looked down, pissed off at the wall that had obviously moved in the midst of my sprint. 'shit, shit, shit.' supposedly, it was my first word (other than momma or daddy). and its only gotten worse. my whole family is bad about it. grandma's favorite is shit. dad's is crap. ben's is fuck. mine? well, it rhymes with blunt. i dont get to use it very often. its reserved for those rare moments when i find myself incensed to the point of speechlessness. then i simply eek out, or scream out, and the world rights itself once more. but sometimes i forget - when im at school, or occasionally at work, that the word 'shit' still shocks some people. but everytime i hear the world 'shit' i think of my grandma, staring me down across the kitchen table, a handful of loosing cards in her hand. 'Shit. You little shit," she laughs at me. "you cheated, you little shit. dammit.' and there is nothing in this world than a little 85yr old lady glaring at you, cussing pouring out of her mouth.... allright. crap. i have to go mount my poster now. crap. crap. crap. okay... thats better.

busy

its a bad sign when stephanie's telling you you're busy. well, maybe its not bad. but its certainly not good. but whats a girl to do? (knocks on wood). now i have to switch gears and start up this campaign nonsense. we'll see how that goes. oh but if i can just make it through this semester. because i looked at the schedule and OHMYGOD i can actually take a writing class next semester. maybe even two if i play my cards right. how fabulous would that be? does anyone know just how big of a hassel it is to take a creative writing course?

i was looking at marks blog about how we need to man up and it occurred to me that when i was in my writing workshop classes we were just as honest. probably moreso. i guess im just not used to the lingo of art class. not sure. half the time i understand perfectly - like i think i did pretty well on my magazine project - and the other time i feel like stephanie is the Swedish Chef. fun to watch, but i have no frigging idea what she's talking about. but im trying. i just try to stay quiet, and listen. i dont want to waste anyones time with stupid questions (and there are stupid questions, by the way. whoever said there weren't was lying. get over it.) i dont mind talking here, because no one is obligated to listen. but in class when a person is being dumb we have yet to reach that point where someone says 'for the love of god shut up already.'

im sure we'll get there.

can i just say that i hate sentence diagramming? sigh. okay. i had to get that out. other than that, i think today went fairly well. i was happy with my profile, and not too shocked about the comments for my campaign. although, i felt today was a little brutal overall. i dont know why. maybe since i was actually awake today i noticed it more. it was neat to see all the different social causes - although i wish more people had picked fun topics.

is anyone else freaked out by this whole motion project? granted, i freak out easily. its in my nature :) but im starting to adust to half my normal sleep.

oh. and i love fragments. i wanted to say that too. maybe it makes me a bad writer, maybe it makes me a bad person. it probably means im going to literary hell (i'll share a cell with danielle steel and patricia cornwell). but i do. i love the staccato sound of fragments...

i was looking through some of my favorite books today (a little princess, the fuck up, twilight to name a few) and i found Youth in Revolt by CD Payne. This may cause some embarrasment for my family, but when your don gives you your mafia sobriquet you don't ask questions.
I am 14 years old (nearly) and live in Oakland, a large torpid city across the bay from San Francisco. I am writing this in the tenuous privacy of my bedroom on my annoyingly obsolete AT clone. CARTOONS! so i'm using 80s cartoons because i think they give a visceral response from people in their 20s-30s. rainbow brite for the girls, skeletor for the guys, and inspector gadget for everyone. my designs are fairly simple and i cant tell if its a good thing or not.

America's Next Top Model. when i check the tv-guide channel it turns out that i've been watching this cheese for the last three hours. so now i'm terrified - are my designs tainted somehow? does my strawberry description sound sexy and fun because i've been subliminally watching tyra strut a bikini all afternoon? did i pick this background color for the durian because it looks like the colors in the set? what would my cards look like if i'd spent the afternoon with barbara walters, or hilary clinton? or - gasp - judge judy. and now, after all this hypothesizing my brain is officially broken and i have no other recourse than to pack it up, turn the laptop off, curl up, and watch the rest of this episode and hope that somewhere in the next 40 minutes i find the resolve to get up, find the remote, and change the channel. after all, mythbusters is always on somewhere.

fontage...

so i have a relatively dumb question. where are you finding all your fonts? i know there's the media lab at school, and all those free-font places online. but is there a package, or an adobe product that i just dont know about? i found a package at 1001freefonts, and now have a pretty extensive library, but i was just curious if there was something more mainstream i should know about. also - maybe because people have a better sense of the dialogue - the verbage, so to speak.

turns out i have to clean up my design. shocker. its a natural tendency to clutter the place up. just like my house. i love clutter. sorry, Real Simple. frankly, i find that magazine's covers creepy. give me color, mish-mash, texture, and lots of it. so... i cleaned up my cards to the point where i find this alienishly simple and that will probably be perfect. :) thankfully, the copy was pretty good. that's my favorite part, so thats what i obsess over.

i will post my profile show and tell as soon as my scanner is up and running. in the meantime... www.complex.com is the url for the magazine.

profile

i dont know why, but i love GQ magazine. its cheeky. everything from the color choices, to the subjects. but its not necessarily artistic, like nylon. so that's what i've decided to use as inspiration. and i've noticed that they do a lot of play with geometric shapes - eek) and have an entire shelf of books devoted to writing well. one of my favorites is writing down the bones, by natalie goldberg. she sneaks in exercises amid the chapters, getting you to write - even if you think you cant. reading sin and syntax, i find i stop mid-thought, consumed with wordchoice, tone, and the dreaded grammar. if you are also having this problem, consider ms. goldberg's approach to the rough draft:

1. keep your hand moving. (dont pause to reread the line you have just written. that's stalling and trying toget control of what you're saying).
2. dont cross out. (that is editing as you write. even if you write something you didn't mean to write, leave it)
3. dont worry about spelling, punctuation, grammar. (dont even care about staying within the margins and lines on the page)
4. lose control
5. dont think. dont get logical.
6. go for the jugular. (if something comes up in your writing that is scary or naked, dive right into it. it probably has lots of energy).

Oh. Not necessarily a glamorous person, most likely a soccer-mommie, but someone who wants to feel a little bit of glamour. Particularly with V-Day just around the corner. Maybe something with limes "pucker up" or something about letting your tastebuds take you away...

I still have to do alot of research on it.
I found one cool plant; the achee. But apparently, if cooked improperly it can cause vomiting or death. Somehow, I just can't seem how to spin that into profitability.

And did you know that the durian gives off such a stench when it's opened up that it has been banned into open Singaporean markets?

Look for more appetizing tidbits at www.foodsubs.com/Fruittroex.html

test

this is a test to make sure everything works according to plan (man, that would be a first for today)
